Adult Literacy Hotline (ALH) Community Outreach Interns

 

Seeking two individuals for summer and/or fall semester for the position of ALH (Adult Literacy Hotline) Community Outreach Intern; one internship will work with the Hmong-speaking community and one will work with the Somali-speaking community.

 

The Adult Literacy Hotline is an Internet and toll-free telephone referral service that helps potential students find adult literacy programs near their homes. Nearly 3,000 people called the hotline last year and 14,000 searches were conducted online. Currently, the hotline telephone service is available in Spanish and English. The ALH Community Outreach Interns will work with the ALH team to assist MLC in reaching out to and serving community members who speak Hmong and Somali.

 

These internships are unpaid. The successful candidates will gain valuable nonprofit and community outreach experience, provide an important service to the community, and learn about the nonprofit field.

 

Specific responsibilities for the ALH Community Outreach Interns include:

·   Develop an outreach plan to publicize the Adult Literacy Hotline service to Hmong- and/or Somali-speaking residents.

·   Implement outreach plan (may include using specific media services, posting flyers, attending meetings, and connecting with business owners and others).

·   Assist Hmong/Somali residents in finding ESL programs near their home by listening to voice messages left in the Hotline mailbox and returning calls.

·   Track calls made by Hmong or Somali speakers.

 

Qualifications:

·   Interest in connecting non-native English speakers to English classes.

·   Experience in outreach or willingness to learn.

·   Hmong or Somali speaking skills (fluent or near-fluent).

·   Experience in or ability to keep track of details.

·   Excellent computer and Internet skills.

·   Excellent customer service skills.

·   Respectful, creative, and self-motivated.

·   Writing skills in Hmong or Somali desired.

·   The ideal candidates will be available 5-10 hours per week.
