Key Vocabulary: insurance, uninsured, coverage, deductible, liability, collision, agent, premium, policy, no-fault, comprehensive, proof. Emergency Road Service

Topics to Review: other driving/automobile topics

Materials: photocopies of auto insurance policy; overhead transparency of the policy; students may also bring in copies of their policies to compare if they wish

Procedure:

Real-life application:

Show your students a copy of an auto insurance policy. Ask students what it is and if any students know what the law is in Minnesota regarding auto insurance. Let students discuss as they wish.

Vocabulary brainstorm: Write the words automobile insurance on the board.  Give students 5 minutes to think of as many words as they can that are related to automobile insurance. Conduct a feedback session by getting their words and having them help you categorize them. This is a good time to assess the language your students already know about the topic and to teach them any unknown vocabulary.

Put the overhead transparency on the projector and distribute the photocopies to students. Talk about the transparency with your students, and write on the transparency any explanations about different parts of the policy that student find useful. Ask students to explain to you any terms on the policy that you covered in the vocabulary part.

Compare: Students compare their insurance policies.

If your students are comfortable with it, you could check out some insurance quotes online. The sites do ask for a lot of personal information in order to complete the quotes and quotes may not be available for immediate viewing.
