Back to the Board
Purpose: To review vocabulary
Preparation Time: None
Materials: Whiteboard and markers; 3 chairs
Procedure:
1) Divide the students into 2 teams.
2) Move 2 chairs up to the whiteboard.
3) Each team chooses one person to go up to the board and sit on a chair with his/her back to the board.
4) You write a vocabulary word on the board. Students must not say the word at this point.
5) When you say “go”, the other students on the team describe or define the word to their teammate on the chair. They may not say the word on the board or any form of the word.
6) The first student with his/her back to the board to say the word wins that round.
7) Two different students take their places in the chairs for the next round.
Variations: You can also have the teams take turns sending someone up to the chair. Then there is less noise and confusion about which team got the word first.
