Cinquain

Purpose:

To give learners a chance to express themselves creatively

 

Preparation time:

None

 

Materials:

Pencils and paper, examples of cinquains, board and markers

 

Procedure:

1. A cinquain is a 5-line poem with several variations

 

2. Choose one of the following Cinquain patterns

 

A. The most commonly used pattern

1st   line- one word expressing title                                                          

2nd line- two words describing title

3rd line- three words expressing action

4th line- four words expressing feelings

5th  line- a synonym for the title

 

B.

1st  line- one word

2nd line-  two words

3rd line- three words

4th line- four words

5th  line- one word

 

C.

1st   line-  five words

2nd line-  four words

3rd line- three words

4th line- two words

5th  line- one word

 

D.

1st line-   2 syllables

2nd line-  4 syllables

3rd line- 6 syllables

4th line- 8 syllables

5th line-  2 syllables

 

2. Show students the cinquain pattern you have chosen.

3. Show students the examples you have written or collected.

4. Have learners brainstorm topic ideas for their cinquain.

5. Choose one topic and write a cinquain on the board together as a class.

6. Have learners choose their own topics and write cinquains individually.
