Comparative Dice
Purpose: To practice using the comparative and superlative
Preparation Time: none
Materials: whiteboard and dice, one die for every 3-4 students
Preparation: locate enough dice for use with your group; plan to review the formation of the comparative and superlative
Procedure:
1. For round one of the activity, elicit six nouns within a specific category from your students and write them up on the board. Number them from 1 to 6. For example:
1) Australia
2) Brazil
3) Korea
4) China
5) Japan
6) Spain
2. Put students into groups of three or four, with a die for each group.
3. The first student in a group rolls the die twice. He or she must then, preferably
within a fairly short time, make a comparison between the two nouns that
correspond with the numbers they have rolled. For example, if a student rolls a 4
and a 5, they might say: “China is bigger than Japan.”
4. Students can carry on until the possibilities have been exhausted.
5. Have each member of the group write a list of six new nouns and pass it to
another member. They then each have a new list and continue making
comparisons from the words on that list.
