Reading for Life Lessons
Minnesota ABE Supplemental Services, Linda Strand, 2004-2005
And the Minnesota Literacy Council
Focus: Comparison Shopping – Unit price (Reading for Life, volume 2, unit 16: Comparison Shopping)
Objectives: Learners will be able to explain unit price and determine unit price for items.
Key Vocabulary: comparison shopping, to compare, unit price, products, purchase, price, quantity, good buy, price tag, information, grocery, advertising
Topics to Review: Measurements commonly found in the grocery store (pounds, ounces, gallons, quarts)
Materials: Food packages; grocery store circulars; calculators
Procedure:
Real-life application:
T shows one of the food packages. T asks “What is this? How do I know how much product comes in this package? Where can I find that information on the package?”
Learners find other amounts on the packages. T or students write the products and amount on the board.
T highlights two products that are similar and writes the price of each item. T asks students: “Do the products weigh the same? Do they have the same price? Is the cheaper one always the better deal? How can we find out?”
T explains concept of unit price. T models how to find unit price (divide the cost by the amount purchased) using the two products. T asks “Now which one is the better buy? How do we know?”
T writes prices for other products on board. T and learners find unit price for each one.
T distributes grocery store circulars. Individually, students choose a few items and find unit price for each one. Students share their information with the class.
Picture Stories (or More Picture Stories) Unit 2 At the Supermarket (a good way to introduce the concept and provide context in the first stage)
