Correcting Our Mistakes

Purpose: To help students become better self-correctors

Preparation Time:  10 minutes, plus time in previous lessons collecting errors

Materials: Sentence strips of student errors (see below)

Preparation: During three or four class sessions, take notes of student errors. Write down the sentence exactly as the student says it. Choose 10 on which you would like to focus attention. Write or type them on a sheet of paper. Make enough copies so that there is one for each group of three students. Cut the sentences into strips.

Procedure:

1)      Divide class into groups.

2)      Give each group a set of strip sentences, placing them face down on the table.

3)      Explain that the group will work together to correct the sentences.

4)      The first person in the group should choose one sentence and read it, exactly as it is, to the group.

5)      Together, the group decides what the mistake is and how to correct it.

6)      All students write the correct version in their notebooks.

7)      The next person in the group chooses a sentence. The group continues until they have dealt with all sentences.

8)      The teacher should monitor and help groups correct sentences when necessary.
