Dictionary Scavenger Hunt

Purpose:

To practice dictionary skills

Preparation time:

10 minutes

Materials:

Dictionary for each student (everyone in the class should use the same dictionary in terms of publisher, version, etc), list of words for each student

Preparation:

Create a list of 10-15 words. Choose words your students understand and can read fairly well. Make sure you select words that are useful to your students.

Procedure:

  1. Hand out a dictionary to each student.
  2. Hand out the word lists.
  3. Ask the students to look up the words on the list in the dictionary. When they find each word, they should write down the page number where they found it. (Have more advanced students also write down a quick definition of the word.)
  4. You can either allow full time for the students to find all the words or you can set a time limit.
