ESL Tutor Pre-Service Training

For volunteers who would like to tutor adults learning English or serve as a computer coach or citizenship tutor.

What You'll Learn
Learn valuable skills for tutoring ESL learners including strategies for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Try out a variety of ESL activities and discuss ways they can be adapted to different language levels or tutoring situations.  You’ll learn how to:

  • Be an effective cultural informant
  • Assess student skills and goals
  • Plan a lesson that meets your student's needs and goals
  • Use techniques such as sight reading, Language Experience Stories, and dialogue journals to help your student improve his or her reading and writing
  • Use your understanding of learning styles to choose appropriate activities
  • Find the many teaching resources available to volunteer tutors

You’ll receive an ESL Tutor Manual with background information on activity ideas and sample lesson plans plus ongoing access to in-service workshops and supplemental tutoring material.
