What You'll Learn Learn valuable skills for tutoring ESL learners including strategies for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Try out a variety of ESL activities and discuss ways they can be adapted to different language levels or tutoring situations. You’ll learn how to:
- Be an effective cultural informant
- Assess student skills and goals
- Plan a lesson that meets your student's needs and goals
- Use techniques such as sight reading, Language Experience Stories, and dialogue journals to help your student improve his or her reading and writing
- Use your understanding of learning styles to choose appropriate activities
- Find the many teaching resources available to volunteer tutors
You’ll receive an ESL Tutor Manual with background information on activity ideas and sample lesson plans plus ongoing access to in-service workshops and supplemental tutoring material. |

Tutor trainees who will be volunteering in the state of Minnesota pay a nominal $30 registration fee. Trainees who will not be volunteering their time and/or who will be teaching English outside of Minnesota pay $50. Some scholarships are available for volunteers. |
