For volunteers who would like to tutor adults learning English or serve as a computer coach or citizenship tutor.
What You'll Learn Learn valuable skills for tutoring ESL learners including strategies for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.Try out a variety of ESL activities and discuss ways they can be adapted to different language levels or tutoring situations.Objectives of the workshop are to:
Increase understanding of the issues and challenges in teaching adult ESL
Prepare volunteers to lead or assist in an adult ESL class
Demonstrate techniques such as sight reading, Language Experience stories, and dialogue journals
Model best practices in teaching
Provide an opportunity to plan a lesson
Introduce the many teaching resources available to volunteer tutors
You’ll receive an ESL Tutor Manual with background information on activity ideas and sample lesson plans plus ongoing access to in-service workshops and supplemental tutoring material.
ESL Tutor Pre-Service Training Schedule The training is 12 hours in total, divided into three or four sessions. Attendance at all 12 hours is required to receive the Tutor Certificate. Our schedule of ESL Tutor Pre-Service trainings will open as a pdf document for easy viewing and printing.
Tutor trainees who will be volunteering in the state of Minnesota pay a nominal $30 registration fee. Trainees who will not be volunteering their time and/or who will be teaching English outside of Minnesota pay $50. Some scholarships are available for volunteers.
