Empty Your Pockets

Purpose: to practice skills of identification, description and comparison using everyday objects

Preparation Time: none

Materials: everyday purse or pocket items

Procedure:

  1. Seat students in a circle.
  2. Ask students to empty their pockets or purses on their desks (students should exclude any embarrassing items, of course).
  3. Ask individual students to do one or more of the following:
    • Give the name of each object: This is______, This is a/an ______.
    • Describe each object: color, size, texture, shape, value.
    • Compare each object to similar objects: for example, bigger than, more expensive than, the heaviest.
    • Group students on the basis of the items: for example, both ____ and _____ have _____, neither/nor, too, so, either.
    • Tell what each item is used for.
    • Tell about the last time the item was used, using the past tense.
    • Use other time frames: next time, how long, how often.

Variations:

·        Discuss what can be guessed about a student, based on the items.

·        Put items into a paper bag without anyone seeing the items.  Have one student reach in and guess the contents of the bag from touch alone.  Or have them describe what they feel.
