| | | Finding Differences
Purpose:
To build speaking skills and practice vocabulary
Preparation time:
10 minutes
Materials:
Two objects that are similar but not identical, such as two shoes, books, coffee cups, writing utensils, beverages or shirts
Preparation:
Collect objects
Procedure:
- Model the activity. Begin by taking your two objects and asking students what they are. Then label them “A” and “B” or ask your students to label them, for example, “running shoe” and “penny loafer.” Write the two labels at the top of your board or paper as the headings of two columns.
- Ask the students to identify the differences between the two shoes. If students don’t know how to describe something, supply those words in simple language, such as “big” and “small”.
- Once your list is sufficient, go back over the list. Ask students to read what is written on the board and then ask them to show the differences on the objects.
Extension:
Take one of the characteristics and have learners generate a list of other objects that have the same characteristic.
