From Pictures to Words

Purpose:

To learn new words

Preparation time:

5 minutes

Materials:

Magazines or store advertisements with pictures

Preparation:

Collect magazines and advertisements that learners can cut.

Procedure:

  1. Have students cut out pictures of objects that interest them. With dictionaries, classmates, and you as resources, they write their name and the name of each object on a piece of paper and clip this to the paper. Walk around, helping with pronunciation.
  2. Each student stands up with one of his/her pictures.
  3. The student finds a partner, looks at his/her picture, and asks, “What is this?”
  4. The partner replies, for example, “It’s a hammer.”
  5. After teaching and learning, they exchange papers and find a new partner.
  6. Continue until most students know most of the words.
