Grammar Chants

Purpose:

Chants help learners repeat and memorize language naturally.

Procedure
:

  1. Choose a chant that fits in with vocabulary or grammar you are already teaching. You may initially only want to use one verse of the chant.
  2. Gather pictures or objects to illustrate vocabulary in the chant. When students hear specific words in the chant, they hold up the pictures or act out phrases with the objects.

Example:

Her laundry is in the laundry bag.

Her gloves are in the drawer.

Her raincoat is in the closet.

Her shoes are on the floor.*

This chant practices clothes vocabulary, “is” and “are” and prepositions.

  1. Divide students into groups and give each group different pictures or objects.
  2. Teach students the line of the chant that goes with their items. As each group masters a line, switch items and have them learn different lines.
  3. Then have students substitute words in the song with different household items.

Example:

Her shirt is in the laundry bag.

Her socks are in the drawer.

  1. For students who have learned to write basic vocabulary you can use chants as fill-in-the-blank exercises. Choose a chant and white out key vocabulary. Provide the missing vocabulary at the top of the worksheet so students can read and practice pronunciation before they listen to the chant. Play or sing the chant and have them write words in the blanks as they listen. You may need to repeat that portion of the chant several times.
