The mission of Hibbing Community College’s Service-Learning Program reads:  “Integrating theories of the classroom with community experiences to strengthen citizenship, enhance personal growth, and enrich the community.” 

We place approximately 600 students each year to serve in non-profit community agencies around the Hibbing area.  We offer innovative community service programs such as an Alternative Spring Break (curriculum based,) an online service-learning course, electronic reflection opportunities, and unique service projects.  HCC also staffs an office dedicated solely to service-learning.

Responsibilities:

• Assisting and mentoring students and clubs in service experiences
• Coordination and facilitation of a MLK Day service project and other “National Service Day” projects
• Re-designing and improving HCC’s service-learning website
• Forging and strengthening partnerships with community agencies across Northern MN
• Creating opportunities for service throughout the Northeast Higher Education District by:
• Creating a data-base of community partners available across Northern MN
• Creating service opportunities that bring campuses/students together such as special service days/projects, events, alternative break trips, etc…
• Collaborating with other area programs such as K-12, Retired Senior Volunteer Programs, and social service organizations to identify community needs and methods to address poverty, its precursors and effects.

Qualifications:

• Interest in community issues and commitment to community service
• Ability to relate to diversity of constituents including faculty, staff, students, and agency personnel
• Meeting facilitation skills
• Knowledge of computers – including word processing and database management
• Ability to multi-task and excellent time management skills
• Public relations/communication skills
• Excellent writing skills
• Willingness to learn
• Desire to make a difference
