Hold up the Letter

Purpose: To practice identifying letters by their sounds

 

Preparation Time:  Time needed to create and/or duplicate alphabet letter sets.  Include both upper and lower case.

 

Materials: One set of alphabet letters for each student.

 

Preparation:  Give each student a set of letters.  The students can cut them apart and put them in an envelope or paper clip.

 

Procedure: 

  1. Tutor says: “I will say a word.  Please hold up the letter that makes the first sound in the word.”  Demonstrate until students understand.
  2. Tutor reads the list.  Here’s a sample list:

bad                  pan                               red                               dip

           

            pan                   wig                               fun                                hat

 

            sad                   yes                               not                               tip

 

            zoo                   get                                job                               kit

 

            mad                  net                                van                               ball
