Focus: Identifying Price (Reading for Life, volume 1, unit 3: Labels: Product and Medicine)

Objectives: Learners will be able to identify the price of items

Key Vocabulary: price, price tag, dollars, cents

Topics to Review: numbers 1-00, money skills, amounts and measurements for food

Materials: grocery store circulars

Procedure:

Real-life application:

T asks students about shopping for food. What do they buy? How much do items cost? How can you tell how much something cost.

T reviews different ways prices are written (using cent sign, and dollar sign and decimal point).

T writes a few prices on the board. Students read them together a few times. T points to a price and students read.

Students work in pairs. One student in the pair writes down a price and the other student reads the price out loud. Students switch roles.

Students find and circle prices in grocery store circulars. T asks questions about the circulars: “How much is ______?” “How much _____ do you get for that price?”

Extensions:

• See Daily Living Activities related to prices on page 38 and 39 of Reading for Life v. 1.
• Prepare 2 lists of prices of varying amounts and have learners work in pairs.  One reads the price and the other writes it down.  Switch.  Then have students correct their answers by looking at the lists.
