Focus: Identifying money (Reading for Life, volume 2, unit 13: Coins and Currency)
Objectives: Learners will be able to identify coins and bills.
Key Vocabulary: money, quarter, penny, dollar (sign), coins, dime, bills, nickel, cent (sign)
Materials: jar of coins, bills
Procedure:
Real-life application:
T takes out the jar of coins and gives one of each coin to each student. T asks: “What is this?” T elicits or teaches: money and coins. Student repeat vocabulary words. T takes a penny out of the jar and shows it to the students. T says: “It is a penny.” Students take a penny from their pile. T asks: “What is it?” T asks: “How much is a penny?” T elicits 1 cent. T writes it on the board, once using the cent sign and as $.01. T elicits or teaches cent sign and dollar sign T repeats this procedure with the other coins.
T holds up a coin. T says: “Is it a ________?” Students answer: “Yes, it is,” or “No, it isn’t.” T repeats with other coins. T can also ask: “Is it a _______ or a _________?”
Money ID game: T calls out names of coins in random order. Students move the appropriate coin to the front of the table. T repeats until students are confident and successful. T may vary the game by calling out the amount the coin the coin is worth.
T shows dollar bill. T asks: “What is this?” T elicits dollar. T asks: “What do we call paper money?” T elicits or teaches bills. T repeats with other bills.
