It Was the Way She Said It

 

 

Purpose: to practice intonation, stress and rhythm

 

Preparation Time:  5+ minutes

 

Materials:  whiteboard and markers

 

Preparation: create a short list of 8-10 words or short sentences that can be written on board.  For example:

  1. I love you
  2. Oh
  3. Hello
  4. Good morning
  5. How are you?
  6. Well
  7. Please
  8. You
  9. Yes
  10. No

 

Procedure:  

  1. Do the first one together and talk about what difference the intonation makes to the meaning in each case or in which circumstances this intonation might be used.
  2. Now choose another word or sentence and ask the students to say it in as many different ways as possible.  Discuss meaning with the group or model a response.
