Purpose:
To help leaners make predictions about a text
Preparation time:
5-10 minutes
Materials:
A text with an accompanying picture (If there is no picture, find a suitable picture in a magazine or on the Internet.); whiteboard and pens or paper and pencils
Preparation:
Choose a text and pick a dozen or so key words from it.
Procedure:
- Put the picture up so that all the learners can see it.
- Divide the learners into pairs or small groups.
- Write two key words on the board.
- In groups, learners discuss what they think the story will be about based on the picture and key words.
- After the groups have had time to speak, add two more words to the board. Learners change their predictions based on the additional information.
- Keep adding words until you have used all of them.
- Read the story. After reading groups discuss which parts of their predictions were correct.
