Key Word Prediction

Purpose:

To help leaners make predictions about a text

 

Preparation time: 

5-10 minutes

 

Materials:

A text with an accompanying picture (If there is no picture, find a suitable picture in a magazine or on the Internet.); whiteboard and pens or paper and pencils

                                               

Preparation:

Choose a text and pick a dozen or so key words from it.

 

Procedure:

  1. Put the picture up so that all the learners can see it.
  2. Divide the learners into pairs or small groups.
  3. Write two key words on the board.
  4. In groups, learners discuss what they think the story will be about based on the picture and key words.
  5. After the groups have had time to speak, add two more words to the board. Learners change their predictions based on the additional information.
  6. Keep adding words until you have used all of them.
  7. Read the story. After reading groups discuss which parts of their predictions were correct.
