Label the Room

Purpose:  To review concrete nouns

Preparation Time:  None

Materials:  Small post-it notes or note paper and tape

Preparation:  Ask learners to tear up some note paper into label-sized pieces or give each learner 20 or more small post-it notes.

Procedure:

  1. Tell learners that they are going to label things in the room that they know the words for.  Each learner writes the name of an object on one of the labels along with his or her name.  They should write and place as many labels as they can in the allotted time.
  2. When you say “Go!”, the learners have 5 minutes to rush around writing and placing labels.  After 5 minutes you shout “Stop!”.
  3. Next you all go around checking the correctness of the labels.  If an object is labeled incorrectly or the word is misspelled, it is returned to the learner for correction.  The person with the most correct labels wins.
