MRC Basics


A very basic summary of Minnesota Reading Corps (MRC).

What it is:

  • An AmeriCorps program.
  • Supplementary literacy instruction for students from age three to grade three.
  • Sites include specific Head Starts, preschools, and elementary schools.
  • Members commit to serving either full-time or half-time for about a year. 
  • Some members serve exclusively with students.  Others recruit volunteers.
  • Volunteers serve one hour per week, preferably for the whole school year. 

What it is not: 

  • MRC is not a mentoring program. 
  • MRC is not an after-school program. 
  • MRC does not provide teacher assistants to classrooms. 
  • MRC does not replace staff.

    Applications will be accepted starting in March 2008 for the Program Year beginning in August 2008.
