A very basic summary of Minnesota Reading Corps (MRC).
What it is:
- An AmeriCorps program.
- Supplementary literacy instruction for students from age three to grade three.
- Sites include specific Head Starts, preschools, and elementary schools.
- Members commit to serving either full-time or half-time for about a year.
- Some members serve exclusively with students. Others recruit volunteers.
- Volunteers serve one hour per week, preferably for the whole school year.
What it is not:
- MRC is not a mentoring program.
- MRC is not an after-school program.
- MRC does not provide teacher assistants to classrooms.
- MRC does not replace staff.
