Making Words

Purpose:

To review spelling and vocabulary

Preparation time:

5 minutes

Materials:

Paper, pen

Preparation:

Cut up paper to form small letter tiles (think Scrabble®). Create 7-10 for each student.

Procedure:

  1. Have the student choose 7-10 letters, including at least 2 or 3 vowels.
  2. Write the chosen letters on the board. Have each student write the letters on pieces of paper.
  3. Have students make words out of the letters. Words can be 1 letter long or 10 letters, but students can only use each tile once per word. Encourage them to physically move the tiles around. When they have formed a word, have them write it on a sheet of paper, keeping a list of words made.
  4. Have students review the words to make sure they are real words that are spelled correctly.

Variation:

In classes, learners can work in pairs or small groups.
