Picture Fun

Purpose: To practice the structure “there is/there are”, singular and plural forms; and to review vocabulary

Preparation Time: 5-10 minutes

Materials:  Copies of a picture for each student of pair of students; board and chalk or markers

Preparation: Find a picture. It should have a quite a lot going on in it in terms of numbers of people and objects. Make enough copies of the picture for each student to have one.

Procedure:

1)      Distribute the pictures. Tell the students you are going to give them 2 minutes to look at the picture. They may not write anything at this point.

2)      When the two minutes are up, collect the pictures. Tell the students they now need to write the words for what they saw in the pictures. Give them a time limit.

3)      Make two columns on the board, one labeled “there is” and one labeled “there are”.

4)      When the time limit is up, have students write their lists on the board in the appropriate columns.

5)      Give students back their copies of the picture and compare their lists to the picture.

Variation: With higher-level classes, leave out the “there is/there are” component and have them write sentences or phrases about the picture instead of words.
