Questioning Partners

Purpose:

To read for a purpose using prediction; to get students to self-assess comprehension

 

Preparation time: 

5 minutes

 

Materials:  

Copies of short reading passage

                                               

Preparation:

Find a short reading passage that will be of interest to your student. Make a copy so you and your student can each have one.

 

Procedure:

  1. Read the passage silently. Have your student do the same.
  2. Ask the student a comprehension question. Have the student find the answer.
  3. Have the student ask you a question. You should find the answer.
  4. Tutors should model a variety of types of comprehension questions (literal, inferential, prediction, interpretive, etc.). Ask the student to generate a similar type of question.

Variation:

In classes, pair students up and have them ask each other questions.
