This training is for volunteers who want to work one-to-one with an English-speaking adult student, with an advanced ESL adult student, or with a student preparing for the GED.

What You'll Learn This training will give you the tools to become a successful tutor. You'll learn valuable strategies for teaching sight reading, spelling, phonics, comprehension, and writing. You’ll also gain a greater understanding of some of the challenges your learner may face when trying to learn to read and write. Learn how to:
- Assess your student's reading and writing skills
- Establish academic and real-life reading and writing goals with your student
- Use textbooks to meet your student's literacy goals
- Teach sight reading and spelling to meet your student's immediate needs
- Help your student develop comprehension and critical reading skills
- Plan lessons that meet your student's needs
- Find the many teaching resources available to volunteer tutors
You’ll receive resources such as the Reading Tutor Manual which has background information on a variety of topics, activity ideas and sample lesson plans, plus ongoing access to in-service workshops and supplemental tutoring materials. |

Tutor trainees who will be volunteering in the state of Minnesota pay a nominal $30 registration fee. Individuals who will not be volunteering their time and/or who will be tutoring outside of Minnesota pay $50. Some scholarships are available for volunteers. |
