This training is for volunteers who want to work one-to-one with an English-speaking adult student, with an advanced ESL adult student, or with a student preparing for the GED.

What You'll Learn
This training will give you the tools to become a successful tutor.  You'll learn valuable strategies for teaching sight reading, spelling, phonics, comprehension, and writing.  You’ll also gain a greater understanding of some of the challenges your learner may face when trying to learn to read and write.  Learn how to:

  • Assess your student's reading and writing skills
  • Establish academic and real-life reading and writing goals with your student
  • Use textbooks to meet your student's literacy goals
  • Teach sight reading and spelling to meet your student's immediate needs
  • Help your student develop comprehension and critical reading skills
  • Plan lessons that meet your student's needs
  • Find the many teaching resources available to volunteer tutors

You’ll receive resources such as the Reading Tutor Manual which has background information on a variety of topics, activity ideas and sample lesson plans, plus ongoing access to in-service workshops and supplemental tutoring materials.
