Benefits of Serving as an MRC Member

Make a Difference in Your Community
MRC members tutor children age three through grade three in literacy. Members' efforts directly benefit their communities, making the future a brighter place!

Experience and Networking
MRC members gain a year of experience working with children in an educational setting. Not only is it eye-opening in terms of exploring career possibilities, but their close work with on-site staff gives them insight from and connections to people already in the field.

Training
Members receive pre-service training in August to prepare them for their roles in the school. They also attend monthly trainings with topics ranging from literacy tutor skills to active citizenship to disability awareness. Trainings are designed to be relevant, useful, and eye-opening experiences.

Use Well-Researched, Professionally Developed Literacy Tutor Tools
Members are trained in SEEDS of Emergent Literacy (pre-k) and specific reading Interventions (K-3). These are research-based, effective literacy tutoring principles and techniques that get results. Members periodically meet with their literacy coaches for guidance and question-answer time.

Grow in Citizenship and Community Volunteerism
MRC program requirements allow members a chance to participate in civic engagement activities and community service projects throughout the year, allowing for members to become more active citizens in their communities.

Bi-Weekly Stipend
Members receive a bi-weekly stipend, which is about $430 for full time members and $215 for half time members.

Education Award
Members who successfully complete their year of service will receive an education award of $4,725 for full time members or $2,362.50 for half time members. Education awards can go towards tuition or repaying educational loans.

Student Loan Deferment
If a member is making payments to a federally-backed education loan, payments can be deferred during his or her year of service. And upon successful completion of the program, the accrued interest will be paid by the National Service Trust.

Health Insurance
Health coverage is available for full-time members only, at no additional cost to the members. The insurance covers only the member and does not cover any dependents.

Childcare Assistance
Full-time members can qualify to receive child care assistance. There are income eligibility requirements that must be met in order to receive reimbursement.
