- One-Year Commitment
- Members must commit to serving for one year, completing 1700 hours of service for full-time members (40 hours/week) or 900 hours of service for half-time members (20 hours/week) throughout the year.

- Our full-time Volunteer Coordinator Liaison position will run from February through December of 2008. The next service year for all other positions begins in August 2008 and ends in July, 2009.

- Members generally serve on weekdays (Monday-Friday) during normal school hours. They also attend monthly trainings on Saturdays. Occasional weekend or evening work is also required for meetings and/or community service activities.
- Attending Pre-Service and Ongoing Trainings
- Members are required to attend the various trainings held throughout the year. These trainings include a pre-service orientation in their first week of service, a pre-service Member Institute on literacy techniques, and monthly Saturday MRC trainings, which include civic engagement training, literacy refreshers, and other topics for member development.
- Participating in Community Service
- Members will earn hours for community service. Members have the option of joining a pre-existing community service program for ongoing service. They may also earn hours for planning and carrying out their own new community service program addressing an unfilled need in a community.
- Completing Civic Engagement Activities
- With the support of MRC staff, members complete five civic engagement activities throughout the year. Activities may include attending a city council meeting, voting, serving on a committee, writing to legislators, etc.
- Ongoing Progress Monitoring of Children's Literacy Skills
- Members are trained to utilize progress monitoring tools throughout the year to track the children's literacy abilities.
- Attending Minnesota Reading Corps Events
- Members are expected to attend planned Minnesota Reading Corps events, some of which are required and some of which are optional.
