One-Year Commitment
Members must commit to serving for one year, completing 1700 hours of service for full-time members (40 hours/week) or 900 hours of service for half-time members (20 hours/week) throughout the year.

Our full-time Volunteer Coordinator Liaison position will run from February through December of 2008.  The next service year for all other positions begins in August 2008 and ends in July, 2009.

Members generally serve on weekdays (Monday-Friday) during normal school hours. They also attend monthly trainings on Saturdays.  Occasional weekend or evening work is also required for meetings and/or community service activities.

Attending Pre-Service and Ongoing Trainings
Members are required to attend the various trainings held throughout the year. These trainings include a pre-service orientation in their first week of service, a pre-service Member Institute on literacy techniques, and monthly Saturday MRC trainings, which include civic engagement training, literacy refreshers, and other topics for member development.

Participating in Community Service
Members will earn hours for community service.  Members have the option of joining a pre-existing community service program for ongoing service.  They may also earn hours for planning and carrying out their own new community service program addressing an unfilled need in a community.

Completing Civic Engagement Activities
With the support of MRC staff, members complete five civic engagement activities throughout the year. Activities may include attending a city council meeting, voting, serving on a committee, writing to legislators, etc.

Ongoing Progress Monitoring of Children's Literacy Skills
Members are trained to utilize progress monitoring tools throughout the year to track the children's literacy abilities.

Attending Minnesota Reading Corps Events
Members are expected to attend planned Minnesota Reading Corps events, some of which are required and some of which are optional.
