Reading Nutrition Labels

Purpose:

To understand the nutritional information presented on food packaging and to understand why that information is important

 

Preparation time: 

None, but your learners need to be familiar with terms on the nutrition label, such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, etc.

 

Materials:  

Bring in or have learners bring in some food packages so that they can compare the nutritional information; paper and pencils

 

Procedure:

  1. Have learners brainstorm nutrition-related vocabulary.
  2. Ask the learners what information about nutrition is on food packaging. They should respond with calories, fat, sugar, etc.
  3. Show learners how the nutritional information is presented on packaging, and what it means.
  4. Discuss with learners the importance of this information for people with particular conditions who may need to avoid certain things in food.
  5. Have learners write the categories calories, fat, saturated fats, carbohydrates, sugars, fiber and protein on their paper.
  6. As they read the nutritional information on the products in the classroom, they should look for the foods that have the highest and lowest amount of calories, fat, saturated fats, etc. and write them on the table
  7. Discuss the results with the class. Which of those foods might they avoid if they were following a diet low in sodium, saturated fat, etc.?
