MLC also coordinates the Summer Reads Program. The goal of Summer Reads is to help low-income children maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer. Approximately 50 Summer VISTAs serve for 8 weeks in Twin Cities' summer schools, libraries and community-based organizations. Summer VISTAs tutor students one-to-one, read aloud with small groups of students, use educational software and computers with students and engage students in literacy activities such as bookmaking, puppetry and word games. Summer Reads is a collaboration between the Minnesota Literacy Council, Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Library, Minneapolis Public Library and many other organizations.
