MLC coordinates the Summer Reads Program. The goal of Summer Reads is to help low-income children maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer. Approximately 75 Summer VISTA members serve in Minnesota summer schools, libraries and community-based organizations. Summer VISTAs tutor one-to-one, read aloud with small groups and play games with students. The VISTAs engage students in literacy activities such as bookmaking, puppetry and word games. Summer Reads is a collaboration between the Minnesota Literacy Council, the Corporation for National and Community Service, Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Library, Hennepin County Library and many other organizations.
