Agree to Disagree

Purpose: to practice expressing opinions on a variety of topics and to negotiate meaning with a group

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials:  3 signs: Agree, Can’t Decide, Disagree

Preparation: Write a variety of statements that you think will elicit strong opinions in your group.

For example:

Basketball players deserve to earn millions of dollars for what they do.

All adults who want to learn English should pay for their classes.

Procedure:

  1. Divide the room into 3 parts and put up the 3 signs.
  2. Read the first statement and ask learners to move to the area that best depicts how they feel about the statement.
  3. The students in each group have a few minutes to discuss why they feel this way and then they present their reasons to the rest of the group.  Depending on the type of statements made by the teacher or leader, this activity can be very serious, very funny, very political, etc.
