| | | Teaching Sight Words With Phrases
Purpose:
To help students learn to read abstract sight words
Preparation time:
5 minutes
Materials:
Flashcards
Preparation:
Choose the words your student needs to learn. Write the word on one side of a flashcard, e.g. “have”
Procedure:
- Help the student generate a meaningful phrase that uses that word. For example, “I have a car.”
- Write that phrase/sentence on the back of the card. Underline the key word.
- Teach the key word as you would any other sight word. Show the student the side of the card with the single word on it. Ask her to read it. If she gets stuck, turn over the card and attempt to read the phrase. That might jog her memory. If the student is still stuck, read it to her.
