Tongue Twisters
Purpose:
To practice pronunciation and have fun
Materials:
Blackboard and chalk or pencils and paper
Procedure:
1. Create four columns with the following categories: person, action, thing and place.
2. Ask learners to suggest words that start with the sounds you are working on for each category. Give examples for each category as necessary.
3. When you have a few words for each category, have the learners make sentences using only the words on the board and functional words (a, and, then, in, on, etc.). Create an example sentence first to model the task.
4. Learners share their tongue twisters aloud – be ready for laughter to ensue!
Extensions:
Add columns for adjectives and adverbs
Sounds that learners may have difficulty with (good for tongue twisters):
Spanish: /b/ vs. /v/
Somali: /b/ vs. /p/
Russian: /s/ vs. /z/
Arabic: /t/ vs. /d/
Chinese: /f/ vs. /θ/ (as in thin)
Tagalog: /f/ vs. /p/
