Total Physical Response

Purpose:

To help learners develop listening and vocabulary skills

 

Preparation time:

None

 

Basic procedure:

  1. Call volunteers to come and sit in chairs facing the class. Sit with the student.
  2. Say, “Stand up.” As you are saying it, stand up. The student should follow suit.
  3. Say, “Sit down.”  And sit. Student will sit.
  4. Repeat the procedure several times.
  5. Introduce a new word. Say, “Walk” and start walking.
  6. Keep introducing new words and actions with you taking the lead on acting them out.
  7. Encourage other students in class to call out actions.

TPR can be made more difficult by increasing the complexity of the actions and vocabulary.
