Our goal at the Minnesota Literacy Council is to support you in all stages of your tutoring experience.  You do not need any specific skills or background in teaching  to volunteer.  We will guide you through the following steps to becoming  a successful volunteer:

1.  To Begin:  Attend one of our pre-service trainings to learn valuable skills for tutoring adults.  If you would like to volunteer with ESL learners, attend our ESL Pre-Service Training.  If you are interested in helping adult learners improve their reading and writing skills or prepare for the GED, attend our Reading, Writing, and GED Pre-Service Training. 

2.  Find a Location: Choose a volunteer literacy program that fits your interests, skills, location and scheduling needs.  Click here to learn about specific programs where tutors are currently needed.

3.  Site Orientation: Once you've contacted a program, meet on-site with the volunteer coordinator to become familiar with the program.  The orientation may include observing a class, meeting staff and volunteers, and learning about their curricula.

4.  Begin Volunteering:  MLC provides useful resources to help you in your work, including access to our library, weekly tutor tips, and a monthly tutor e-newsletter.

5.  Continue Learning: Take advantage of the free, frequent Tutor In-Service Workshops offered by MLC on a variety of topics.
