Focus: Addressing Envelopes (Reading for Life volume 2, unit 15: Letter Writing)

Objectives: Learners will be able to identify different parts of an addressed envelope and write out an addressed envelope

Key Vocabulary: envelope, mail, return address, street address, city, state, ZIP code, stamp

Topics to Review: writing addresses

Materials: envelopes, both blank and addressed, address one envelope to a learner in your class

Procedure:

Real-life application:

Show the class the envelopes. T asks students: “What are these? What are they used for?” T elicits or teaches envelope, mail, letters. T asks students: “Do you get mail?” T discusses with students.

T draws two houses on the board. Label one with your name and one with the name of the student you addressed the envelope to. Discuss who lives in which house.

T asks: “Where does this envelope go?” Learners identify the address written in the middle of the envelope. T asks: “Who sent this letter?” Learners identify your name and address T asks other questions like those on 15-2 and 15-3 in Reading for Life. T reviews vocabulary: street address, city, state, ZIP code and teaches return address.

On the board as a class, learner addresses an envelope from the learning center to a learner or teacher. Students copy this information onto a real envelope.

Learners address an envelope from themselves to another learner. T monitors.
