What Will My Money Buy?

Purpose:

To practice grocery store vocabulary; to practice math skills related to money

Preparation time:

None

Materials:

Copies of the same grocery store circular; real or fake money (bills in $1, $5, $10, $20 denominations)

Procedure:

  1. Show learners the $1 bill and elicit how much it is worth.
  2. Distribute the circulars.
  3. Point to a product in the circular. Ask learners if you could buy that product with $1. Do this with a few more products.
  4. Learners look through the circular to find other things they could buy with $1.
  5. Show learners the $5 bill. Point to a combination of products in the circular and ask if you could buy them with $5.
  6. Learners find combinations of products they could buy with $5.
  7. Assign each learner an amount of money. They must decide what they would buy from the circulars using that amount. Learners then share their shopping lists.
