What's My Change?
Purpose: To practice the names and amounts of coins
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Materials: Worksheet; jar of coins
Preparation: This is a matching activity. On the left-hand side of the worksheet, write 10 monetary amounts under $1. On the right-hand side of the paper, write out the number and types of coins you would need to get those amounts. Do not write them straight across from the amounts they correspond to. Make a copy for each student.
Example:
$ .67 1 dime + 1 nickel + 2 pennies
$ .34 2 quarters + 1 dime + 1 nickel + 2 pennies
$ .75 1 quarter + 1 nickel + 4 pennies
$ .17 3 quarters
Procedure:
1) Review coin names and values using the jar of coins.
2) Give students the worksheet. Tell them they must draw a line from the amount to the names and numbers of coins that create that amount. Students may use the coins in the jar to help if they are stuck.
3) Challenge students who finish early to think of other combination of coins that create each amount.
