What's the Remedy?

Purpose:

To practice speaking; to share cultural information. This activity works best with a multi-nationality class.

Preparation time:

15-20 minutes

Materials:

Assorted remedies for different ailments, e.g. orange juice and chicken soup for a cold, a hot water bottle for a backache, honey for a cough; ibuprofen, green tea, etc.; slips of paper with ailments written on them; worksheet.

Preparation:

Collect your remedies for different ailments and put them in a grocery bag. Cut up slips of paper (enough so that every student has one) and write one ailment on each slip of paper. To make the worksheet, create a chart with the different ailments in the first column and room for peoples’ names in the top row. There should be room for students to write in the boxes. Make a copy of the chart for each student.

Procedure:

  1. Give each student one of the slips of paper. Tell them they need to find a remedy for their ailment in the bag and take it back to their seat.
  2. When all students have chosen a remedy, each student should share the information with the whole class.
  3. Distribute the worksheet. Tell students that they are going to interview 3 of their classmates to find out what they do if they have the ailments on the worksheet. Tell them they should interview classmates from different countries than they are. They may also interview you.
  4. Give students time to do their interviews. Circulate to participate in the interviews and help students with vocabulary.
  5. When students have finished, conduct a whole group feedback session to find out the most interesting remedies for each ailment.
