Volunteer Literacy Program Locations

Minnesota Literacy Council partners with adult literacy programs across the state. We can help you get connected to a literacy program that serves adult learners in an area convenient for you and that meets your interests and scheduling needs.  For information about these programs, please contact Allison at arunchey@theMLC.org or 651-645-2277 ext. 219.


July 2008 Immediate Volunteer Opportunities

Awali Place East – Twin Cities RISE! – 633 University Ave., St. Paul 55104

One-to-one GED tutors needed for Math or English.  Opportunities are available on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays in two-hour blocks between 12:30 – 4:00 pm or 4:00 – 6:00 pm.  Or, tutor on Fridays between 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  Curriculum and support is provided.

Capitol Hill English School105 University Ave. W., St. Paul 55103

Teachers are needed for multi-level ESL classes on Mondays – Fridays, from 9:30 – 11:30 am, and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.  Volunteers are also needed to assist in their computer lab on Fridays, 9:30 – 11:30 am.

ESL teachers needed on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, from 10:00 am – 12 noon.  Or, Mondays – Thursdays, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.  Citizenship volunteers are needed on Tuesdays, 5:00 – 7:00 pm.  Curriculum and support provided.

ESL teachers needed Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  Citizenship tutors are needed Tuesdays, 10:00 am – 12 noon.  Curriculum and support provided.

CommonBond Communities - Seward Towers, 2515 9th St. S., Minneapolis, MN 55406

The Seward Towers are looking for ESL teachers and classroom assistants, especially for pre-literate to high- beginning students, on Tuesdays from 11:00 am - 12:30pm. 

English Learning Center - 2315 Chicago Avenue South, Minneapolis  55404

ESL teachers needed Wednesdays or Thursdays for evening classes. 6:45 – 8:30 pm. 

Learning Dreams – 112 Williams Ave. SE, Mpls 55414

ESL volunteers are needed to lead a conversation group with Somali women on Thursdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  One-to-one tutors are also needed to work with intermediate to advanced level ESL learners.  Days and times for these opportunities are flexible according to the availability of the learners and volunteers.

Hennepin County Public Libraries – locations in Minneapolis

Small group and one-to-one tutors needed in the Reading Lab, Tuesdays – Fridays from 10 am – 1 pm.  ESL conversation tutors are also needed to lead small groups for “Conversation Circles” at area libraries.

MLC Learning Center-Arlington Hills – 1115 Greenbrier St., St. Paul 55106

The Arlington Hills Learning Center is looking for ESL classroom helpers and one-to-one tutors for all levels, beginning through advanced, Monday - Friday, 9:15 am – 1:15 pm, with flexible scheduling.  

MLC Learning CenterLake Street – 2700 E. Lake St., Mpls 55406

Classroom assistants are needed in the mornings, M, W, or Th, from 9:00 am – 12 noon, and in the evenings, M, T, or Th, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

MLC Learning Center-North Side – 611 Van White Mem. Blvd, Mpls 55411

An ESL teacher is needed for Mondays, 10:00 am – 12 noon, to work with an intermediate level class, and on Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, to work with an advanced level class.  ESL classroom assistants are needed in on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 10 am – 12 noon, to provide one-to-one help to beginning level students. GED math tutors are needed on Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

MLC Learning Center-Northeast – 2511 Taylor St. NE, Mpls 55418

ESL teachers are needed during morning and evening classes, 10 am – 12 noon, or 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Curriculum and support are provided.  Computer language lab teachers are needed Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, 12 noon – 1:15 pm, and on Mondays – Thursdays, 5:30 – 6:30 pm. 

The Children’s English School at Northeast is also seeking volunteer classroom aides to work with 3-5 year old children on kindergarten readiness and literacy skills, Monday –Thursday, from 10:00 am -12 noon.

MLC Learning Center-Rondo - 461 Dale St. N, St. Paul  55103

ESL teachers needed for beginning level class, Mondays or Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, for July - August.  Basic reading tutors are needed in the afternoons, once or twice a week, with flexible scheduling.   

Neighborhood House –

GED teachers are needed for English on Mondays, 8:45-11 am, 10:45am - 1:00 pm, or 6:00 - 8:30 pm.  A GED Math teacher is needed on Tuesdays, 6:00 – 8:30 pm, and a Science teacher is needed on Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:30 pm.

ESL co-teachers, classroom assistants and one-to-one tutors are needed Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays, from 5:45 – 7:45 pm, and on Wednesdays for one hour between 1:00 – 6:00 pm.
