The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) and the Corporation for National and Community Service sponsor 40 yearlong AmeriCorps*VISTAs (Volunteers In Service To America). VISTA members help organizations create the sustainable infrastructure needed to fight poverty in their communities. VISTAs serve at community-based organizations, libraries, elementary schools, colleges and universities throughout the state, working to improve children's literacy by expanding after-school and in-school reading programs; recruiting, training and supporting volunteer tutors; involving parents in family literacy activities; and developing resources for tutoring programs.
