Since 1997, The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) has responded to an increasing need for citizenship services through a special joint initiative with the St. Paul Community Literacy Consortium. MLC recruits, trains and matches citizenship tutors with ABE programs on an on-going basis. MLC provides citizenship classes at several learning centers in St. Paul, and networks with citizenship teachers and lawyers to stay current on the changes in the citizenship process.
MLC also provides citizenship updates to adult literacy programs in the state through the Literacy Landscape newsletter and at statewide conferences. At in-service workshops, volunteers are taught about the citizenship process and how to prepare applicants to pass the citizenship test and interview.
If you are interested in helping applicants obtain U.S. citizenship, click here to learn more about tutoring opportunties. We ask that you attend the MLC ESL Tutor Pre-Service Training and a citizenship In-Service Workshop. If you are seeking a citizenship class in Minnesota, search the Adult Literacy Hotline or call 800-222-1990.
