Training
Well-trained volunteers are vital for learner success. The MLC offers a variety of high-quality Pre-Service Tutor Trainings and In-Service Workshops. Volunteer literacy programs are strongly encouraged to send volunteers to MLC’s tutor training and supplement with their own program orientation.
MLC trainings are designed to meet the training standards for adult literacy volunteers developed by the Minnesota Department of Education. For an overview of all training options, browse the MLC Training Catalog.
Trainings in the Twin Cities Metro Area:
Reading, Writing, and GED 12-hour Pre-Service Tutor Training
English as a Second Language 12-hour Pre-Service Tutor Training
In-Service Workshops
Educational Technology Trainings
We also offer customized workshops. For details, see Hosting an In-Service Workshop.
Trainings in Greater Minnesota:
MLC trainers are available to travel to your program for a customized volunteer training. For details, see Hosting a Pre-Service Training in Greater Minnesota and complete the Training Checklist and Contact Info.
Classroom Assistant Trainings:
Volunteers who will be assisting in ABE or ESL classrooms are strongly encouraged to attend one of the 12-hour pre-service trainings offered by MLC.
However, programs that are using short-term volunteers, such as service-learning students, may request a 3-hour classroom assistant training. The content of this training varies depending upon the needs of the program. For details, contact Burgen Young at byoung@themlc.org.
Online Trainings:
Several trainings are available online. The easy-to-use, self-paced, free format is moderated by an MLC trainer. They are designed to give a general introduction to volunteering as a classroom assistant and do not include the same information as the 12-hour pre-service trainings.
